Mixed Media SUMMATIVE

Overall for this project, while I feel like I could have done a better job for the product, I really like how much I learned about new medias through the making of it. While I had an original plan, through mistakes, ideas and lack of materials my outcome was pretty different than what I had in mind.

The medias I used were:

• Wood
• Newspaper
• Acrylic
• Gouache
• Watercolor
• Wire
• Screws

The girl was done by using a mixture of pastel colors for the skin, and yellows and oranges for the hair. In order for some contrast, I used dark blues, greens and purple and speckled it with white to give a galaxy look. I used newspaper for the background because I felt it matched the wood look of the shirt.

After creating the main subject of the girl, I realized it was slightly smaller than I hoped, meaning there was a lot of empty space. I originally was going to use up this space to do some interesting wire artwork and have a wire thought bubble coming from her head, but the day I was going to begin this, the hot glue ran out. With minimal time left to finish the art piece, I instead found some screws and began hammering them into the wood and wrapping the wire around it. This timely process only allowed me to do an outline of the girl, which can be seen better in real life than in pictures. Lastly, to cover some of the above empty space, I used some plastic wire I found and pulled it across the wood. Since it wasn’t stuck down, it made some interesting shadows on the piece.

Printmaking

During our printmaking class I tried various designs and one of the prints that was the most successful was an imprint of some flowers. At first I used ink to stamp my carving but later I tried to use acrylic paint to show various colors on the image.

Final Project 3

Lastly, this piece took by far the longest to make. I started out with a photograph I took and began using the line tool and grid to make small triangles on different parts of his face. The idea was to make sure the triangles showed the shadows and differing colors on his face. I then used the inspector and fill color to pick the ‘background’ color and fill in the triangles. This slow process may have been annoying, but the end result looks both complex and interesting.

(When it’s zoomed in, you can see how the triangles give off a geometric look but also retain the same color and shadows from the original image)

Final Project 2

This piece took a long process of trial and error, but eventually I got to my desired result. I began with using a picture in which the horizon is clearly visible and turned them horizontal. By using the blur, smudge and stamp tool, I was able to make a strange inception-esque image.

Final Project 1

For my final project I decided to do various digital art pieces using photoshop.

My first piece; a gif drawing of one of my friends, is a style which I’ve done several times now. The process I go through for each of these is that I first draw the picture digitally using the iPads or my phone. I then transfer the drawing to photoshop and color everything but the areas I want the gif to show. Lastly, I convert gifs into video files and add them into photoshop.

 

 

May 24 – last project update

So far this is what I’ve been working on..

I am most likely going to either pick one of the above, or create something similar for one of my summatives.

Continuing off some gif photoshop art I did before, I created another one out of a line drawing I made.

Right now, I am working on a photoshop piece which I am drawing over using the iPad.

SUMMATIVE Wet Media

For this summative I decided to use watercolor paint because I know how to use it better and am more comfortable. My plan for this piece was to make a slightly detailed top half in watercolor and finish it up with ink after it dried. For the bottom, though in the image it looks exactly the same in the water, I felt that if I made water blotches it would look more like a watery reflection. I really like how the top ended up because the paint doesn’t look messy and the ink isn’t really bleeding out anywhere. For the bottom part, I like how the lack of ink and bleeding out color makes it look like a blurry reflection. If I had to change one thing, it would be the drawing because I feel like I could have put more effort in making it look clean and realistic.

Portrait SUMMATIVE

Special Lighting:

This was one of my favorite portraits I took during this unit, mostly because of the unique lighting. Mikayla and I changed the theatre lighting backstage to give it a blueish tinge, and by shining a light on her mussed up hair, I got a huge contrast of light and dark down the middle of the photo.

Mood:

Unlike most of my photos, this was a completely candid shot of my sister. Whilst taking pictures of the water and playing with fast shutter speeds; I found the perfect moment when my sister wasn’t looking to take a photo. I like that the photo is not only centered, but the blue water and her expression go together to show mood.

Special Effects:

After a lot of trial and error, Mikayla and I managed to get interesting shadows from a piece of cardboard over a light. From this hour of shooting different lightings, positions and shadows, I found that tilted, larger stripes looked best for portraits. Then, using photoshop skills from the color unit, I used selective coloring on her hair and face to emphasize it. I feel like changing the hair color to a pale purple made the image look more interesting and less average – as well as gave a pop of color in an otherwise dull image.

Tells A Story:

I had the most fun taking this triptych photo as I got to visit the elementary school and take pictures of the kids during play-time. Out of all the students, the boy above was the most active and excited, which is the reason I chose to ‘tell a story’ through portraits of him. These three photos combined required a fast shutter speed, mostly because of how much he was moving, and also a lot of cropping to get rid of background distractions.

Self – Portrait:

While at the beach I decided to take my self-portraits because of the natural lighting and interesting background, and after taking a lot of images, it ended up that the one I took by accident looked the best. Because of the lighting from the sun, the way my hair is messy and flying around, and how perfectly centered and in focus the portrait is, I found it was the best to pick. To edit it and make it more visually interesting and appealing, I used the liquify tool on Photoshop to give a melting-sunglasses look on my face.
